Abstract

In order to study the reaction or susceptibility of Nd:YAG laser cleaned stones to polluted atmospheres, several types of stone, both cemented (limestone) and crystalline (marble, granite), were exposed to an atmosphere having simulated SO2 pollution. The subsequent effects on the specimens were assessed for variations in surface morphology, weight and colour The main conclusion is that the application of laser irradiation to the selected stone specimens does not significantly influence their reaction to sulphur dioxide
