Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the mechanical properties of concrete reinforced with bamboo (Dendrocalamus giganteus) fibers. The fibers were produced by a knife mill (crushed fibers) and by manual cutting tools (laminated fibers). Moreover, the concrete fiber volumes (Vf) studied were 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5%. Furthermore, compressive strength, four-point bending flexural strength, and splitting strength tests were carried out in the produced concretes. The bamboo fibers had their tensile strength and water absorption characteristics measured. They were also analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The bamboo laminated fibers promoted a better mechanical behavior than bamboo crushed fibers. SEM images evidenced a good fiber-matrix interface and the failure mode of fiber in the concrete. On the other hand, the concretes had a decrease in compressive strength with increasing Vf. The results were discussed in terms of micromechanics and microstructure.
